How Funds are Managed

The Community Foundation of South Jersey has an affiliation with the Community Foundation of New Jersey for the purposes of investing donor funds and minimizing administrative costs for our donors.  An Investment Committee is responsible for establishing investment policies and strategies, selecting and removing investment managers, determining asset allocations, establishing acceptable bands around each allocation, establishing maximum manager investment strategy allocations, establishing benchmarks and monitoring the performance of same.

The Investment Committee is composed of current trustees of the boards of CFNJ and CFSJ and at-large members appointed by the Community Foundation of New Jersey's Board of Trustees that do not have a monetary interest or business relationship with any of the Foundation’s current investment managers.  All members serve a two-year term which may be renewed by the Board of Trustees.  The Chairman and the President of the Community Foundation of New Jersey will serve as ex-officio members of the committee.  The Investment Committee meets at least quarterly.

The investment policies of the Foundation are carried out by means of investment strategies that reflect continuous evaluation of changing investment environments, time horizons for grantmaking, judgment regarding the allocation of the Foundation’s assets among different asset classes, identification of appropriate investment vehicles and the making of specific investment decisions.  In seeking to attain investment objectives, the Investment Committee exercises prudence and appropriate care.

The primary objective of the investments will be to provide for adequate total investment return of principal and income without undue exposure to market risk to enable the Foundation to accomplish its charitable purposes and to make grants on a continuing and reasonably consistent basis.

The overall asset allocation strategy is to diversify investments to provide a balance that will enhance long-term total return while avoiding undue risk or concentration in any single asset class or investment category.
