Coopers Ferry Partnership Neighborhood Revitalization

Prospectus

The North Camden Neighborhood Revitalization Project

(Coopers Ferry Partnership)

Implementing a comprehensive set of revitalization strategies identified by residents in the North Camden Neighborhood plan through a coalition of not-for-profit organizations working together with residents.

North Camden Neighborhood Redevelopment Initiative

The North Camden neighborhood is a small urban neighborhood with nearly 40% of residents living in poverty. While the neighborhood still struggles with significant poverty, poor housing conditions and low educational attainment among residents, the coordinated efforts of Coopers Ferry Partnership and all community stakeholders are providing a concentration of resources that are helping to attract investment in the neighborhood.  Leveraging over 130 years of cumulative experience, the four lead organizations – Camden Lutheran Housing Inc., Cooper’s Ferry Partnership, Respond, Inc., and Save our Waterfront – are supporting the cohesive action of over 30 stakeholder organizations dedicated to transforming North Camden. Utilizing their respective core strengths, skills and specializations, these four organizations work individually and in collaboration to implement the North Camden Neighborhood Plan.

Their work in North Camden centers on the following three strategies:

  1. Empowering residents and partner organizations to transform North Camden
  2. Transforming the physical environment
  3. Delivering high quality human and social services

Key Project Activities anticipated over the next five years include:

  • Neighborhood Building through resident and stakeholder engagement, including monthly community meetings, and publication of a semi-annual neighborhood newsletter
  • Placemaking initiatives including the design and management of public spaces as well as establishing active and inviting areas that encourage physical activity.
  • Physical transformation of two underperforming parks.
  • Engaging residents in the Block Support Initiative, which encourages residents to take ownership of the beautification of their own residences through maintenance of the front and back of their own lots, clearing trash and debris, planting trees and flowers, adding lights and decorations.
  • Provide residents with work force development through the Auto Tech program and the youth summer job readiness programming.
  • Implement a neighborhood marketing plan to replace negative billboards with positive messaging opportunities.
  • Stimulate innovative community solutions to by providing small grants to other stakeholder partners within the neighborhood who are leading projects that provide short or long term solutions to community solutions in North Camden.
