Camden Freedom School

Prospectus

The Children’s Defense Fund Camden Freedom School is a six-week summer program that started in 2015 with major funding from Educational Testing Service.

The Camden Freedom School focuses on underserved youth in low-income areas to develop a capacity and love for reading, encourage positive attitudes toward learning and improve parental engagement through five essential components: 1) high quality academic enrichment; 2) parent and family involvement; 3) social action and civic engagement; 4) intergenerational servant leadership; and 5) nutrition, health and mental health.

Now in its second year of operation, the Camden Freedom School serves approximately 50 students in its six-week program.  With the dearth of quality summer learning programs in Camden, the school fills a tremendous void.  Post-program evaluations of the school conducted by Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) show that the program is of high quality and meeting the program goals outlined above and as established by CDF. Books that are read during the summer are given to the students to take home at the end of the program so that they can start/add to their own home library.

The Camden Freedom School is operated by the Camden Dream Center. The Camden Dream Center is part of  Koinonia Family Life, Inc., a non-profit based in Camden NJ.
