UrbanPromise Ministries Inc.

UrbanPromise’s mission is to equip Camden’s children and young adults with the skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, spiritual growth, and Christian leadership. They strive to fulfill their mission through after school programs, summer camps, two schools, experiential learning, job training, and a host of other programs that challenge youth to develop and realize their potential. UrbanPromise maintains a relationship-based approach and aims to engage participants throughout the year and over several years. Collectively, UrbanPromise’s programs reach more than 700 children and teens annually.

Experiential learning opportunities and wellness activities are offered throughout UrbanPromise’s private schools (K-12) and out-of-school time programs. Hands-on and journey-based activities for youth focus on environmental science, leadership development, real-world applications of classroom learning (e.g. boat building), on-the-water paddling experiences and excursions that highlight history, culture, and the environment. The Wellness Center at UrbanPromise guides the organization in taking a trauma-informed approach and integrating physical activity and nutrition education in daily programming.

Also unique to UrbanPromise’s vision is a commitment to involving local teens in community leadership. UrbanPromise provides training, employment, academic enrichment, and leadership development programming for 100+ teens and young adults. Youth gain experience in the fields of education, community development, environmental advocacy, and small business. By involving teens in the leadership process, UrbanPromise is creating a new generation of young, visionary leaders who embody a commitment to changing their own community.

In 2017, the Camden public school graduation rate was 66%. In contrast, over the past five years 94% of UrbanPromise’s high school students graduated and 95% transition to college or a vocational training program. Many UrbanPromise alumni return to Camden after college to serve their home community (e.g., teachers, social workers, police). UrbanPromise is also proud to employ alumni.
